Meet the engineer!
Say hi to the genius behind the sites, Archie!
Say hi to the genius behind the sites, Archie!
I’ve been working on my sites because it’s the perfect playground for a mix of curiosity, skill‑building, and convienence. It's also a chance to refresh or learn something in areas I touched on in school but don't use in my day to day work. By digging into back‑end code, setting up a web server, and playing with networking protocols, I get to see how all the moving parts talk to each other – and being a hands‑on learner that makes all the difference for me.
I've also been into self-hosting my data recently. Instead of handing my data to a third‑party (and paying a subscription fee every month), I get to own it: the server, the database, the storage, and the security. It’s a great area to apply my security knowledge, with the convenience of having my data available wherever. I really wanted a way to host my drone shots on a site without paying for storage and github caps files at 25mb. This meant I would have to compress my photos' quality which kinda sucks when my Drone shoots in 4K and the file sizes are bigger.
With the help of a couple free HTML templates from HTML5UP, the sites let me showcase high‑resolution imagery, create a homeserver landing page, and even share some cool woodworking and/or resin ideas my dad comes up with! It’s a fun way to share my pictures without taking up everyone's storage, play around with networking, and tune everything else out:)
